Stage 2 – Conscious Incompetence

The ‘ah-ha!’ moment where the patient/client first becomes aware of what they cannot do; they consciously face their inadequacies and incompetencies. This phase can be maddening for the patient/client, as they expect more from themselves and get disappointed at their functional naivety. The patient/client has two clear choices to make…ignore the incompetence and return to the lower functional state of blissful ignorance, or rise to the challenge and learn to overcome their incompetence. Failure to move out of this stage effectively keeps the individual in a state of conscious incompetence hell.
