Stage 1 - Unconscious Incompetence

The patient/client is unaware of what they cannot do. Essentially a state of blissful ignorance, this stage is representative of resident inadequacies woven into the fabric of one’s daily functional activities. A patient/client will not typically emerge from this state without an outside influencer (i.e. doctor, therapist, coach, trainer). Almost equivalent to an infantile state; however, this stage, unlike that of an infant, does not necessarily have the entitlement of unbridled growth and development ahead, unless there is some level of outside intervention. Outisde intervention will typically come from one who is in a place to observe and identify the level of competence (see Stage 5), and can take the form of physical and/or instructional guidance.
