Stage 4 - Unconscious Competence

This stage can prove difficult to secure, but it represents the permanent engraining of our new found ability; to the point that the ability is now carried out without our conscious intent. The individual becomes so proficient at the ability that it becomes part of their normal function, and they no longer have to consciously perform the task. This is the crown jewel of neuromotor learning, and all learning for that matter. Our abilities and our experiences become truly part of us. However, those who reach this level are at risk of becoming complacent, of no longer adopting new methods and/or failing to maintain the current level of functioning; the patient/client is in danger of reverting back to an earlier stage. Coaching and the demand for technical proficiency with all athletic and training activities helps to retain this level of function. Physical intervention can also be helpful if the trained capacity is a physically functional one.
